I've been a storyteller my whole life and a professional writer for much of it. I worked in New York's Off-Broadway theatre world. I was a story editor and associate producer in the film and television industry. I led a children's arts and recreation non-profit for more than a decade, I've made dozens of short films and promo videos, and written hundreds of magazine articles. I grew up in New England, lived and worked in New York City, adopted the state of California as my home for many years, and returned to the East Coast, where I now reside with my fisherman husband in the house that was once my grandparents' summer home.
I can tell a story about anything - an underloved fish, a rural beekeeper, a staff appreciation week, a renowned artist who uses reclaimed materials, a stunning coastal condo, or how to support a maritime museum - and I can tell it really well. You need your story told with clarity, humor, specificity, and effectiveness. You want the world to know what you have to offer and I can help. I bring with me significant editorial skills and an expansive background in entertainment, media, and non-profit programming & management.
"These are just a few words that come to mind when I think of writer Lisa Cavanaugh. I was fortunate to connect with Lisa in 2014 while I was editor of Cape Cod Magazine and Chatham Magazine—and she has been my go-to writer ever since. She can write on any topic I throw her way, from beautiful homes and people profiles to the fishing industry and family businesses. When people ask me to recommend a writer, Lisa is always at the top of my list. Not only is Lisa an excellent writer, but she’s also collaborative, enjoyable to work with, comes up with unique story ideas and has never missed a deadline. I highly recommend Lisa Cavanaugh for any writing project!"

"Lisa is exceptional at what she does. Her vocabulary and attention to detail are exemplary. Lisa always amazes me with how she can take high-level bullets and transform them into a final communication, regardless of the topic. She always hits the mark and is a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Lisa as she’s a great collaborative partner and an important extension of our company.”

"Lisa has been part of the Hollywood HEART family since its inception 27 years ago, including as its Executive Director for twelve years. What distinguishes Lisa from most writers is her background in the entertainment industry, where she honed her storytelling skills, providing her with the ability to communicate all types of stories. Whether she was conveying the struggles and triumphs of our campers and young artists or effectively promoting the impact of our organization to reach a wider audience, her writing has always been exceptional. Those skills also transferred to the specific and unique language of grant proposals, newsletters, funding appeals, and comprehensive program descriptions. Lisa’s work always significantly advanced our non-profit over the course of decades and helped make us a success."

"As an award-winning TV writer, I find Lisa is the person I trust most to give me extremely thoughtful and thorough notes. I’ve used her feedback to improve features, pilots, and spec scripts in many genres. She has the rare ability to identify story issues—everything from flawed premises to dialogue that just needs a tweak. What I find most valuable is her incredible skill at suggesting solutions to script problems, which is always the most challenging part of giving notes. She has a prestigious pedigree in the entertainment industry that she is humble about, but she’s worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Lisa is a brilliant, awesome person who genuinely cares about making stories and writers better."

Years ago, I was instrumental in bringing an arts and recreation camping program for kids and teens living with HIV and AIDS to Malibu, California. As is the tendency at summer camp, nicknames were readily given and greatly enjoyed. A good friend was riffing on my last name, playing around with “Cavs,” “Cavalicious,” “Cavawhatnot,” etc. You get the idea. Anyway, by the end of that happy summer, I was known as Cavanation - and it stuck. So when we work together, feel free to call me that!
